Museo di Santa Restituta

Archaeological museum beneath the basilica of Santa Restituta in Lacco Ameno, with Phoenician, Punic and Roman tombs; currently closed for works.

Temporarily closed. The museum cannot be visited: the finds have been moved to Villa Arbusto, and the complex is undergoing safety and refunctionalisation works, with an 18-month design schedule started in 2025. No reopening date has been announced.

About the museum

The museum arose in the early 1950s, when repair works on the chapel of Santa Restituta, in the centre of Lacco Ameno, brought to light in 1951 an early Christian crypt beneath the floor. The excavations revealed an ancient Christian cemetery and, further down, numerous Phoenician, Punic and Graeco-Roman tombs.

The definitive layout of the excavations and the museum dates from 1974. The particularity of the site is the coexistence of the archaeological area and the museum collection in the same place: over time, finds from other areas of the island of Ischia have also been gathered here. The museum is on the underground level of the Santa Restituta complex, near the Museo archeologico di Pithecusae at Villa Arbusto.

After the damage of the 2017 earthquake and the landslides of 2022, the complex is the subject of a major project of safety and refunctionalisation, coordinated by the Agenzia del Demanio (State Property Agency). In 2024 the finds were moved in containers to Villa Arbusto, where they remain stored until the museum is redisplayed.
