About the museum
The Museo del Risorgimento (Italian unification), entitled “I Viaggi”, was opened in Castelbuono on the occasion of the donation of the Garibaldian memorabilia of Francesco Romeo, honorary inspector for cultural heritage, former mayor and co-founder of the Museo Civico. The cataloguing was carried out by the art expert Giovanni Sottile. The collection had previously been shown in exhibitions at Palazzo Filangeri-Cutò (2008) and at Palazzo dei Normanni in Palermo (2011).
The museum occupies the former Banca di Corte, also known as Palazzo di Città, which faces Piazza Margherita. The core of the building dates back to the first half of the 17th century and housed the offices of the city administration. On the top is a mechanical clock from 1885, made by the Milanese firm Isidoro Sommaruga, whose mechanism can also be seen.
The rooms hold documents, paintings, sculptures and images, weapons and objects, commemorative medals. The exhibits include reliefs and paintings, relics of Sicilian Garibaldians such as spyglasses, a field compass and a hat with the tricolour cockade pierced by bullets, everyday objects from the 19th century, and a library of about a thousand volumes with original editions from 1861. Among the documents are proclamations issued in Castelbuono in 1860.
