About the museum
The museum is housed in the former convent of the Capuchin Fathers, a 17th-century building in the hamlet of Zafarana, in Geraci Siculo. The collection was started in 1983 and the museum was officially established in 1985; it is run by the Comune.
The collections document life and work in the Madonie: tools and household objects of the agro-pastoral economy, products of the traditional craft and folk art of the area, along with the traditional cycles of work. A particularly notable piece is the series of architectural fragments made by the stonemasons of the Madonie.
Among the items kept in the building are a 19th-century wax funeral mask, the Transfiguration by Giuseppe Di Garbo dated 1794, a canvas of the “Mater Salvatoris” attributed to a 16th-century Flemish painter, and the historic library of the Capuchins with over one thousand five hundred volumes.
