Museum of the Jewish Community of Trieste, in the former Jewish hospital: sacred furnishings from the city’s synagogues, the history of the Community and a section on the Shoah.

Opening hoursAdmission €7

About the museum

The museum was opened in January 1993 on the initiative of the Jewish Community of Trieste, with the contribution of the Wagner-de Polo family. The building formerly housed a Jewish hospital and, until 1941, the Jewish Agency (Agenzia ebraica), which assisted refugees fleeing the Nazis who left Trieste for Palestine or the Americas. In the mid-1920s Polish Jews set up a small Ashkenazi prayer room (oratorio), active until 1987; today it is part of the display and is still occasionally used for worship.

The collection includes ritual objects, silverware, textiles and books from four city synagogues (1748–1825), dismantled in 1912 with the opening of the Tempio Maggiore (main synagogue), as well as private donations. The oldest piece dates from 1593. Notable objects include a 17th-century pledge book in Triestine dialect written in Hebrew characters, and two sovereign patents of Maria Teresa d’Austria of 1771.

The Shoah section displays personal objects confiscated from deported Jews of Trieste, returned to the Community only in 2000. On the ground floor spirituality and traditions, the history of the Community, the Shoah and the relationship with Eretz Israel are presented; on the first floor are the section on culture and a conference hall. Between 2014 and 2015 the museum was renewed with multimedia content and texts also in English.
