About the museum
The museum's material was collected during the First World War, between 1915 and 1918, on the initiative of Alfonso Sansone, and the museum opened in 1918 at the Società siciliana per la storia patria. In 1932 it was given a new layout and, after the damage of the Second World War, it was reorganised and officially reopened on 15 April 1961.
After renovation work that began in 2006, the museum reopened on 29 May 2010 under the name Museo del Risorgimento “Vittorio Emanuele Orlando”. It is on the ground floor of the 14th-century cloister of the church of San Domenico, home of the Società siciliana per la storia patria.
The main hall presents materials arranged by the phases of the Sicilian revolution (1820–21, 1836–37, 1848–49) and the relics of the Garibaldian expedition. A room on the east side of the cloister is dedicated to Francesco Crispi.
