About the museum
MUTEC is the museum dedicated to collecting and interpreting the cultural heritage of Cassano delle Murge and the Alta Murgia area. It aims to offer the community a reading of its own heritage that goes beyond the local context, and it also presents itself as a research and development centre, in collaboration with heritage protection bodies and with Italian and foreign research institutes.
The exhibition follows a chronological and thematic route that spans over thirty-five centuries of history, from prehistory to the modern age. It is organised into four sections across thirteen rooms. The visit uses multimedia itineraries in which visitors can move freely between objects and linked information.
The section “Arte e devozione popolare” brings together works from the demolished church of Santa Chiara, ex-votos, votive bells and wrought iron. “La Murgia carsica” presents the archaeology, geology and landscape of the plateau, with references to the Nisco cave and the Copper Age. “Lo sviluppo rurale” is devoted to peasant life in the 1930s and to oral tradition, while “Alla scoperta del territorio” reconstructs the phases of the town’s development with historical panels and photographic collections.
