About the museum
The Monte Sannace park holds one of the most important indigenous sites of pre-Roman Peucetia. The first investigations date back to 1929, with Michele Gervasio; further campaigns followed from the Soprintendenza in 1957 and 1976, and an excavation by the University of Bari from 1999. The site has yielded remains from the Iron Age to the early Imperial period of Rome, reaching its peak between the 6th and 3rd century BC, especially in the Hellenistic period.
In the second half of the 4th century BC the settlement was given defensive walls that separated the acropolis from the residential area on the plain. Large tombs are visible in the area, together with a public building called “stoà”, a Hellenistic house and painted tombs.
The visit route comprises two itineraries, one archaeological and one natural, which start from the Masseria Montanaro at the main entrance and cross plain and hill in the Murgia landscape. Some finds from the acropolis, including an antefix and a krater, are displayed in the nearby Museo archeologico nazionale e Castello di Gioia del Colle.
