About the museum
The museum was founded in 1968 on the initiative of Vito Donato “Dino” Bianco, a chemist at the University of Bari and councillor for culture in Sammichele, who collected tools and objects of rural life to preserve the memory of the community. After his death in 1990 the collection was named after its founder.
The museum is housed in the Castello Caracciolo, a building linked to the feudal family that governed the town from its foundation in 1609 until 1806. The present display dates from 2010 and spreads over several floors, with rooms devoted to the different aspects of work and everyday life.
The collections comprise around five thousand objects, presented together with written and oral sources, historical photographs and illustrated panels. The route follows the production cycles of grain, olive oil and wine, shows the workshops of the blacksmith, the stonemason, the cartwright and the saddler, and recreates domestic spaces such as the hearth. Other rooms deal with means of transport, women's work, popular religiosity and children's games.
