About the museum
The MUST is a civic museum of the Comune di Vimercate dedicated to eastern Brianza, the area between the rivers Lambro and Adda. Opened in 2010, it is housed in the south wing of the 18th-century Villa Sottocasa in the historic centre and has been accredited by Regione Lombardia since 2014.
The villa was built in the last decades of the 18th century on the site of a 16th-century residence of the Sfondrati family. In 1860 it passed to the Ponti brothers of Gallarate, who turned it into the residence of Luigi Ponti and his wife Elisabetta Sottocasa, from whom it takes its name. The Comune bought the south wing and the central body in 2001, starting the restoration of the villa complex, garden and park.
The route unfolds over two floors and about a thousand square metres. The ground floor follows chronological order from the Roman age to the 19th century; the first floor has the more recent themes, from industrial development to changes in the landscape and local memory. Archaeological finds, artworks, models, documents and videos are presented with multimedia tools.
