About the museum
The Museo del Tesoro del Duomo is in the Archbishop’s Palace in Vercelli and holds goldsmiths’ work, textiles, paintings and sculptures from the heritage of the Cathedral of Sant’Eusebio. The route tells the long history of the Diocese of Vercelli, the oldest in Piedmont, and of the religious, political and social events in which bishops and canons were involved.
It is run by the Fondazione Museo del Tesoro del Duomo e Archivio Capitolare, set up by the Archdiocese, the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Vercelli and the Metropolitan Chapter, which also looks after the Biblioteca e Archivio Capitolare, where the famous Vercelli Book is kept.
The ground-floor rooms, partly frescoed in the 16th century, house, among other things, the great Ottonian crucifix of the Cathedral, German textiles of the 13th and 14th centuries, the binding of a 4th-century codex and one of the main collections of reliquaries in northern Italy. On the upper floor, the Stanze del Papa (Pope’s Rooms) recall John Paul II’s visit in 1998 and the commissions of figures such as Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere. Since 2021 the route has ended with the Armadio dei Vescovi (Bishops’ Wardrobe), devoted to the liturgical accessories and jewels of the bishops of Vercelli in the 19th and 20th centuries.
