About the museum
The museum grew out of the collections of the Vercelli notary and collector Camillo Leone, who gathered antiquities, paintings, sculptures, goldwork and art objects and bequeathed them to the city through a foundation. The first rooms were opened to the public in 1910.
The seat is made up of three buildings from different periods: Casa Alciati, a Renaissance mansion with a double-loggia courtyard and an important cycle of frescoes from the early 16th century; the link wing; and Palazzo Langosco, an elegant late Baroque residence built in 1742. The Leone family came into possession of it in the 19th century, and the palazzo served partly as the collector’s home and partly as space for his collections.
In the 1930s the loggia was added at the south-west corner; since 2014 the visit route has also included the last rooms of the west wing. The museum also has an ancient library and an archive, which can be consulted on request.
