About the museum
The museum combines two collections donated to the city of Savona. The first is that of Sandro Pertini, a native of Savona and President of the Republic, who wished to leave his city the collection of artworks he had gathered during his life; the Museo d'Arte Sandro Pertini was inaugurated in 1991 on the first floor of the Palazzo della Loggia, inside the Fortezza del Priamàr.
The second is that of the sculptor Renata Cuneo, from Savona, who donated her works to the municipality in 1986. The collection was first displayed in 1990 in the Bastione di San Bernardo and later moved to the Palazzo della Loggia.
Today the two collections are on the second floor of the Palazzo della Loggia, in close but distinct sections. The Pertini collection comprises about a hundred paintings and sculptures by 20th-century artists, while the Cuneo collection presents sculptures in ceramic, bronze and terracotta devoted above all to the human figure, with both religious and secular subjects. The museum also serves as a documentation centre on the history and culture of the city. Works not on display are kept in an equipped store near the entrance and can be consulted on request.
