About the museum
The Museo del Villano is housed in Villa Badoer Fattoretto, an 18th-century summer residence of the Badoer family at Sambruson di Dolo, along the Riviera del Brenta. The name recalls the “villani”, the inhabitants of the villages that grew up around the Venetian villas. The collection was built up by Luigino Fattoretto, from a family of sharecroppers and peasants, to pass on to his descendants the spirit of earlier generations.
The collection comprises around 20,000 objects, still awaiting cataloguing, spread across eight rooms covering about 1,000 square metres. The “sala degli editti” (edicts room) holds ducal letters, notices and acts from the Riviera del Brenta and the Venetian hinterland, many from the Napoleonic period, alongside tower and belfry clocks and musical instruments.
Carriages and gigs follow, along with one of the first motorised threshing machines, sixteen wine-transfer pumps and the tools of craftsmen and farmers: coppersmith, glazier, ropemaker, mason, barber, watchmaker, printer, hatter, knife-grinder and cobbler. In the barchessa (farm arcade) and the hayloft there are kitchen utensils, a wooden hand-operated washing machine, equipment for silkworm rearing, hemp processing and spinning, as well as period toys. A park with a small lake extends around the villa.
