About the museum
The museum is housed in the complex of the former Lanificio di Stia, in Casentino. From the mid-19th century to the 1950s the plant was the centre around which the area’s economy revolved and, in the early decades of the 20th century, it was one of Italy’s leading woollen mills, known for producing the traditional panno Casentino.
After decades of abandonment, the building was restored over about three years, funded by the Fondazione Luigi e Simonetta Lombard, owner of the site. The museum opened on 2 October 2010. It is no longer a place of production but a centre for spreading the textile culture of the area.
The route tells the story of wool processing from the origins of human civilisation to the Industrial Revolution and the golden age of the woollen mill. The visit is designed as a sensory experience: visitors can touch, smell and listen, and try some typical gestures of manual processing. The museum also runs educational workshops and courses.
