About the museum
The museum is housed in the convent of the Padri Minori at Pianetto, close to the archaeological area of the Roman city of Mevaniola. Finds from different periods tell the very ancient history of the Galeata area: the splendour of the Umbro-Roman town, Theodoric’s villa, the secluded Abbey of Sant’Ellero and the castle of Pianetto. The collections interact with the convent spaces and the sober lines of Renaissance architecture in the Tuscan style.
The museum is named after Mons. Domenico Mambrini (1879–1944), an antiquities collector regarded as its founder. The archaeological section starts from his collection, which includes a small Egyptian terracotta idol of Isis with Horus, and continues with sites in the area and prehistoric and protohistoric finds. The Mevaniola room holds the honorary key with a dog’s-head handle from the 1st century AD and the funerary stele of Rubria Tertulla; there follow Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, with the relief of the meeting of Saint Ellero and Theodoric and the column statue showing the childhood of Saint Nicholas.
The art-historical section holds works in the Florentine style, including a noble coat of arms in pietra serena attributed to Desiderio da Settignano and frescoes from the church of Santa Maria al Pantano. The museum organises events, workshops and educational activities for schools and adults, and it also serves as Galeata’s tourist information office.
