About the museum
The Oratorio di San Rocco was built between 1525 and 1542 by the confraternity of San Rocco on the area in front of the church of Santa Lucia, adapting existing buildings. After the confraternity was dissolved in the Napoleonic period, the building passed to state ownership. At the beginning of the 20th century it was bought by the municipality, and it was restored between 1926 and 1929.
The lower hall, the former chapel, is covered with frescoes executed between 1536 and 1545 by Domenico Campagnola, Girolamo Tessari, Gualtiero Padovano and Stefano Dall’Arzere, with episodes from the life of San Rocco. On the altar stands the altarpiece of the Madonna with saints by Alessandro Maganza, installed in 1697.
The upper hall, known as the Sala del Capitolo (chapter hall), contains a stucco altar frontal commissioned in 1535 and attributed to Tiziano Minio, and two frescoes of 1559 by Stefano Dall’Arzere with scenes from the life of Santa Lucia. Today the oratory is one of the monumental venues of the Musei Civici di Padova and also hosts temporary exhibitions.
