About the museum
The museum is located in Piazzetta Cappellato Pedrocchi, beside the Piano Nobile of the Stabilimento Pedrocchi, the famous historic café opened in 1831 and extended on the upper floor in 1842. It is part of the Musei Civici di Padova, and its ticket also includes admission to the Pedrocchi.
The route traces the history of Padua and of Italy from the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797 to the republican Constitution of 1948, with particular attention to the city’s role in the Risorgimento, the First World War and the Fascist period. Among the objects on display are photographs, a machine gun from 1917, a carabinieri uniform, a bersaglieri bicycle and a flag raised in Trieste when it was liberated in 1918, together with period films from the Istituto Luce and the Imperial War Museum.
In the Sala Bianca the marks of the shots fired during the student uprising of 1848 are still visible. The museum also recalls the bombing of 1944 that damaged the frescoes by Mantegna in the Ovetari Chapel.
