About the museum
The museum of the Basilica di Gandino was created to house the numerous works of art of the parish church. It was conceived by the parish priest (prevosto) Mons. Giovanni Bonzi and opened on 15 December 1929, with the support also of Mons. Angelo Roncalli, the future Pope John XXIII, who often visited Gandino.
The original premises soon proved too small for the heritage accumulated over the centuries: the museum was renovated and expanded in 1963 by the parish priest Mons. Antonio Giuliani. A further expansion in the 1980s, promoted by Mons. Alessandro Recanati, led to the creation of the sections devoted to nativity scenes and textiles, in an old building near the museum. In 1965 the museum was classified as a “museo medio di ente religioso” (medium-sized museum of a religious body).
The route comprises the Museo di arte sacra, with silverware, lace, wooden sculptures, tapestries, vestments, liturgical textiles and paintings; the Museo dei presepi, with nativity scenes of various origins; and the Museo dell’archeologia tessile, linked to Gandino’s wool-working tradition.
