About the museum

Malga Lunga stands almost at the top of Mount Sovere, at 1,235 metres. It was originally a medieval communal cattle shed, named after its long portico. In 1944 it became the base of a squad of the 53rd Garibaldi Brigade, named after the “13 Martiri di Lovere”, the partisans shot on 22 December 1943. On 17 November 1944 the hut was surprised by fascist forces of the Legione Tagliamento: after almost three hours of fighting the eight partisans present surrendered, and two wounded men were killed on the spot; the six survivors, including squad commander Giorgio Paglia, were shot a few days later.

In 1979 Gianni Radici donated the building to the Comune of Sovere, in line with the partisans' wishes, and the brigade's museum was born there. In 2005 the Comune granted it on a free loan for 99 years to the provincial ANPI branch of Bergamo, which renovated and extended it: since 2012 the Museo-Rifugio della Resistenza bergamasca has been active, with an interactive multimedia museum and a teaching room.

The route allows visitors to consult, on touch screens, the lists of partisan formations active in the province and of people from Bergamo who fought for freedom in Italy and abroad. Since 2024 ANPI has been working on a redesign of the museum and, in 2026, the refuge joined the network “Paesaggi della Memoria”. Malga Lunga is considered a national monument and a symbol of the Bergamo Resistance.
