About the museum

Since September 2002 the convent of San Francesco has housed the Museo di Arte Sacra of Greve in Chianti, with a documentation centre on the sacred art of Chianti, which informs visitors about the works kept in the churches and pievi of the area, the so-called museo diffuso (dispersed museum). At the end of 2004 an archaeological section with ceramic finds and everyday objects from protohistory to the early Renaissance was inaugurated; a new display in the restored rooms is in progress.

The route is organised in three sections: paintings and sculptures; goldsmith’s works and sacred furnishings from the 14th to the 19th century; and Tuscan vestments of the 16th to the 18th centuries. In the chapel can be admired a 14th-century Annunciation and the Lamentation over the dead Christ from the circle of Baccio da Montelupo. The sacristy holds a rare reliquary cross in rock crystal from the second half of the 14th century and a painted glass of the 16th century. On the first floor are works by Francesco Curradi, Francesco Boldrini and the workshop of the Embriachi.

The museum’s panoramic terrace hosts cultural events in the summer season.
