About the museum

The museum tells of the agricultural activities of the Maremma and the Orbetello area and of the changes that took place from the early 20th century to the land reform of the 1950s, reconstructing peasant life of that period. It is located in Albinia, the newly founded settlement whose origin lies precisely in the transformation of the Maremma countryside.

The route unfolds across three rooms. The first is devoted to the farmers from the early decades of the century to the period between the wars, between large estates and sharecropping (mezzadria): reproductions of paintings, historic photographs and a large quantity of work tools and everyday utensils. The second illustrates the reclamation and river embankment works of southern Maremma, such as the embankments of the Osa and Albegna, with bridges and canals documented in photographs.

The third room covers the years from 1957 to 1977, when the Ente Maremma reorganised the farmland and built new smallholdings (poderi) and new settlements, Albinia included, with numerous images and maps of the new land subdivision.
