About the museum
The Forma Urbis Romae was a marble plan of Rome, carved between AD 203 and 211 in the Severan period on about 150 slabs. The first fragments were found in 1562; since then the recovered pieces, roughly a tenth of the original, have entered the Capitoline collections.
The museum, opened in 2024, is housed in the former Palestra della Gioventù Italiana del Littorio (GIL), a 1930s building within the Parco archeologico del Celio. In the main hall the fragments are laid out on the floor above the plan of Rome drawn by Giovanni Battista Nolli in 1748, so that visitors can look down on them and place them within the city’s topography.
The building also houses a selection of architectural and decorative materials from the Antiquarium Comunale, the result of excavations at the end of the 19th century.
