About the museum
The museum is housed in Palazzo Lanfranchi on the Lungarno Galilei, which already hosted temporary exhibitions before the museum officially opened in 2007. It is part of the Sistema museale di Ateneo (university museum system) of the University of Pisa.
The collections include the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe (drawings and prints cabinet) of the Department of History of Art. The contemporary graphic art collection was founded in 1958 at the initiative of Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti and has been enriched by numerous donations from artists.
Among the main bequests are that of Sebastiano Timpanaro, with more than a thousand pieces and a particular strength in the 19th and 20th centuries, and that of Giulio Carlo Argan, with around six hundred works from the second half of the 20th century. Artists who have donated works include Picasso, Capogrossi, Greco, Morlotti, Munari, Vedova and the Pomodoro brothers.
