About the museum
The museum was founded in 1974 by a group of friends and is now a legally recognised association, a documentation and study centre for the Great War in Lombardy. It has operated as an association since 1984, and its collections are recognised by the Lombardy Region, which accredited it as a museum in 2014.
The Temù site, open to the public since July 2011 and officially inaugurated on 28 July 2014 for the centenary of the start of the Great War, houses a permanent exhibition devoted to the Guerra Bianca (White War), the front fought among the glaciers of the Adamello-Presanella and the Ortles-Cevedale. The building also includes a room for temporary exhibitions, a specialised library-archive, a teaching room, a conference hall and a bookshop.
The collection of more than 1,700 items comes almost entirely from finds recovered by members and staff of the museum in the glacier areas, as well as from collaborations with other museums and donations from families. The circular route over two floors illustrates the life and survival of soldiers at altitude, weapons and artillery, transport, trenches and suffering, with historical texts alongside original testimonies from combatants.
The museum also manages other Great War sites in Lombardy, including Forte Montecchio Nord and the Forte di Fuentes in Colico.
