About the museum
The museum opened in 2000, founded by a group of scholars linked to the Laboratorio Etno-Antropologico, which has been active in Rocca Grimalda since 1996. It was established with the aim of making this small village in the Oltregiogo area of the Genoa region a centre of cultural research able to work with Italian and European institutions interested in popular traditions.
The main inspiration was the Lachera, a carnival ritual with very archaic features, whose masks show strong similarities with rites still practised in many parts of Europe. From an ethnographic perspective, the museum presents a permanent collection devoted to carnival, festivals and masks.
