About the museum
The origins of the castle date back to the early 13th century, when the inhabitants of the settlement of Placiano moved to the present village and built a first tower with a ricetto. Over the centuries the fief passed to the Marquises of Monferrato, the Malaspina, the Trentino counts of Lodron, the Gonzaga and finally the Centurione Scotto family, princes of the Holy Roman Empire from 1654.
The building was extended several times and gradually lost its defensive features, becoming a stately residence. In the 18th century the drawbridge and moat were replaced by a stone bridge and then filled in. In 1916 the castle passed to the Pallavicino family, to whom the last major restoration is due, carried out between 1916 and 1921.
Inside there is a large hall once used for the game of pallacorda, the apartments of the castellans (castle stewards), two frescoed rooms with old fireplaces and the prisons, where graffiti left by prisoners can still be read. On the façade are painted the coats of arms of the families that ruled the fief.
