About the museum
The museum was founded in April 1987 in Predosa on the initiative of Giuseppe Pipino, who in the seventies had collected materials during geological and historical research on the ancient mines of the Val Gorzente and the gold deposits of the Val d’Orba. A first permanent display had already been set up in Casalcermelli in 1981.
After an initial period in Predosa and a temporary move to Silvano d’Orba, since 2001 the collections have been housed in Lerma, in the former elementary school building made available by the Municipality. The museum is run by the Associazione Storico-Naturalistica and receives no public funding.
The collections illustrate the history of gold in Italy from the 16th century to the present: documents, topographic maps, bibliography, photographs and tools, samples of gold-bearing minerals and native gold, shares in mining companies from the 19th and 20th centuries, finds from the Val Gorzente and the Monte Rosa mines, and tools for collecting alluvial gold. The museum also has a historical archive and a specialist library.
