About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the ’Ndocciata of Agnone, a fire ritual linked to Christmas. The ’ndocce are large torches made of fir trunks and bundles of broom, which every year, on the night of 24 December, are lit and carried on shoulders in procession along the main street of the town.
The collection, housed in a small space on Via Caracciolo, displays several examples of ’ndocce, one of them four metres high, reconstructions with mannequins in traditional costume, photographs documenting the various stages of preparation, and the trophy awarded every year to one of Agnone’s five contrade (districts). It also documents the ’ndocciata performed in Piazza San Pietro in Rome on the feast of the Immaculate Conception in 1996, in front of Pope John Paul II.
