About the museum
The Museo della Nostra Terra is located in Ocre, one of the 37 villages (frazioni) of the municipality of Leonessa, on the Leonessa plateau between Lazio, Umbria and Abruzzo. It was opened in 1994 by the Pro Ocre Association, which conceived and runs it, with the aim of preserving the area’s folk traditions, which were threatened by the depopulation of the village.
The collection is housed in two rooms of the former primary school and grew out of donations from residents of Ocre and the municipality of Leonessa, beginning in the early 1990s. It now comprises over a thousand objects from Ocre, Leonessa and other regions, particularly the Marche.
The objects document crafts and agro-pastoral work cycles, devotional practices and everyday life: there are tools of the shepherd, the cobbler, the farmer, the barber, the blacksmith, the innkeeper, the tailor and the plate maker, as well as material on the school and the local wildlife. The display is completed by old photographs, holy cards, images, documents, maps, books and a traditional costume. The items are shown in classic display cases, with brief captions giving the object, donor and place of origin.
