Franciscan museum beside the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli: Crucifix by Giunta Pisano, 13th-century panels and a dossal by Andrea della Robbia.

Opening hoursAdmission €3

About the museum

The Museo della Porziuncola is part of the route followed by pilgrims and visitors who, from the Porziuncola to the Cappella del Transito and the Cappella delle Rose, visit the memorials of St Francis at the papal Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. It offers a place for deeper study, with archive documents, models and graphic reconstructions, to help understand these places better.

The rooms hold, in chronological order, the works that made the museum famous. Among them are the Crucifix by Giunta Pisano of 1236, the first example in Italy of a “patiens” crucifix on a monumental cross; the St Francis and angels by the Maestro di San Francesco, from the 13th century; a panel depicting St Francis attributed to Cimabue; the Madonna del latte, a polychrome stone sculpture of the late 14th century; and a fine glazed terracotta dossal by Andrea della Robbia, dated 1475.

The route also includes the so-called Conventino, what remains of the friars' original cells: the rooms, recently restored, host temporary exhibitions of contemporary sacred art.
