About the museum
The museum is located in Assisi, in the complex of the Benedictine abbey of San Pietro, within the historic centre inside the 14th-century walls, next to the gate of the same name. From the terraced square there is a view over the Valle Umbra. The church of San Pietro is a fine example of Umbrian Romanesque architecture.
Since 2002 the museum has occupied the old cellars of the abbey, founded in the 10th century on land then outside the city and included within the walls from the 14th century. The route includes the crypt of St Victorinus, bishop of Assisi in the 3rd century, the reliquary chapel, the sarcophagus, the Roman city gate of the walls, the well of the martyrs who were companions of St Victorinus, and the 13th-century underground passage that linked the abbey to the Hospital of the Poor, built in 1250.
Among the works stands out the 15th-century triptych by Matteo da Gualdo, with the Madonna enthroned and Saints Victorinus and Peter. In the Sala delle Granaglie and the Sala della Cantina the collection “San Francesco e il presepe nell'arte contemporanea” is displayed, with works by Dalí, Sassu, Balla, Funi and Fazzini.
