About the museum
The Pinacoteca comunale di Assisi was founded after Italian unification, when frescoes and paintings detached from civic and religious buildings in the town were gathered together. It opened in 1912 in the former convent of Sant’Antonio, where it remained until 1926; in that year it moved to the ground floor of the Palazzo dei Priori and finally to its present home, the piano nobile of Palazzo Vallemani.
The route shows the development of local painting from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. Among the most important works are a Maestà (Virgin in Majesty) attributed to Giotto or a member of his workshop, the Madonna di Palmerino by Guido, formerly on the façade of the church of San Niccolò, and a fragment of the fresco from Porta San Rufino by Puccio Capanna. One room is dedicated to Tiberio di Assisi; next to it hangs the gonfalone (processional banner) by Niccolò di Liberatore, known as l’Alunno.
The remains of the frescoes from the façade of the Ospedale dei Pellegrini, painted by Ottaviano Nelli, are also on display, as are works by Dono Doni and, in the last room, the most important panel in the museum: San Francesco morente che benedice Assisi by Cesare Sermei.
