About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Gallipoli is one of the sections of the museums of the Diocese of Nardò-Gallipoli and is named after Mons. Vittorio Fusco, bishop of the diocese from 1995 to 1999. It was inaugurated on 12 July 2004 on the initiative of the Italian Episcopal Conference, the diocese and the community of the co-cathedral Basilica of Sant'Agata, with a contribution from the European Union and the Puglia Region. The idea for the museum goes back to Bishop Aldo Garzia and was carried forward by his successors. After a closure, the museum was reopened and named after Mons. Fusco.
The site is the old Seminary palace beside the Cathedral, built from 1750 onwards. The building has largely kept its original appearance, with numerous Baroque decorations; it extends over three floors covering about 900 square metres.
The collection includes 553 artifacts from the cathedral, the curia and the episcopal palace: silverware, liturgical goldwork, vestments, mitres, crosiers, pectoral crosses, bronze bells, numerous portraits, the coats of arms of bishops painted on ceramic, and works by Gian Domenico Catalano. The former chapel on the first floor houses the silver and gold statues of the patron saints Sant'Agata and San Sebastiano, made in Naples.
