About the museum
The museum, declared a national monument in 1981 and opened in 1982, occupies an eighteenth-century palace built by the Tafuri family of Gallipoli. It illustrates Messapian civilisation through the finds from Alezio and its surroundings.
The display cases contain the grave goods of about a dozen tombs from the town and the Monte d'Elia area, dating from the early 4th to the early 3rd century BC. They illustrate the funerary customs of the middle agricultural class, which made up the majority of the Messapian population. The material also includes some inscriptions, among them one found in a tomb on Via Kennedy, dating to the 6th century BC and rare for its time.
In front of the palace is a small open-air archaeological park with slab tombs and sarcophagi dating from the 6th to the 3rd century BC.
