About the museum
The museum occupies the rooms of Porta San Pancrazio, on the Janiculum. The present gate was built between 1854 and 1857 by Virginio Vespignani on the ruins of a 17th-century gate, damaged in the fighting of 1849 in defence of the Roman Republic.
On 19 April 1951 the premises were entrusted to the Associazione Nazionale Veterani e Reduci Garibaldini (National Association of Garibaldian Veterans and Survivors), and the museum opened to the public in 1976 with two sections: one devoted to the Risorgimento and Garibaldi, the other to the Italian partisan division “Garibaldi”.
The present route extends over four floors in thematic order, from the European revolutions of 1848 to the fall of the Republic in July 1849. It includes busts, paintings, prints, Garibaldian memorabilia, models and multimedia stations; the room on the second floor houses a model of the battle of 30 April with a video on the French siege. The last rooms commemorate Luciano Manara and Goffredo Mameli and present the Constitution of the Roman Republic.
