About the museum
The museum opened in 2007, when the municipality of Viggiù expanded the exhibition spaces dedicated to art after the inauguration, in September 2006, of the Museo degli artisti viggiutesi del Novecento. It is housed in the orangery of Villa Borromeo, in the historic centre of the town, a short walk from the Museo dei Picasass, and is part of the Musei Civici Viggiutesi.
The collection presents sculptures by 19th-century Viggiù artists: Luigi and Giuseppe Buzzi Leone, Angelo and Antonio Bottinelli, Giosuè and Antonio Argenti, and Stefano Butti. Among the works are “Il Cacciatore delle Alpi” (the Garibaldian) by Luigi Buzzi Leone, “Cloe e Dafne”, “Lotta di leoni” by Giuseppe Buzzi Leone, the “Busto ritratto di Felice Argenti” by Stefano Butti, and several self-portraits.
The entries on the sculptors also trace their training: for example, Angelo Bottinelli studied at Brera, where he later taught drawing, while Giosuè Argenti was a pupil there of Pompeo Marchesi.
