About the museum
The museum arose from the decision of the sculptor Enrico Butti (born in Viggiù in 1847) to donate his plaster-cast collection (gipsoteca) to the Comune of Viggiù. The gift was formalized by notarial deed in January 1926 and confirmed in a letter of 1931, on condition that the arrangement he had prepared be kept. The gesture saved a body of models which, following the artist’s habit, would have been destroyed after the marble or bronze works were completed.
The building was constructed specifically in the Parco Butti. A first cataloguing dates from 1938; in 1964 a room was added for Il minatore (The Miner) and the reliefs of the Verdi monument, and a renovation in 1975–76 led to a new display. Between 2002 and 2004 the systems were upgraded, the structures repaired, and the plasters cleaned and restored.
The collection comprises 87 plaster models and some paintings by the artist. Three rooms are devoted to the plasters for the monument to Giuseppe Verdi in Milan; on the upper floor, paintings and sketches are displayed. Among the best-known works are Il minatore, Il guerriero di Legnano, Il tempo, L’angelo dell’evoluzione, La morente and the monument to General Sirtori.
The museum is part of the Musei Civici Viggiutesi network, together with the Museum of Viggiù artists of the 20th century, the Museum of Viggiù sculpture of the 19th century and the Museo dei Picasass.
