About the museum
The Museo della Valle di Cavargna was founded in 1982 by Don Federico Scanziani, parish priest of Cavargna from 1957 to 2004. The idea was to show objects in their original context of use, not as a mere collection but as a way of reliving the community’s history. In 2007 the museum was recognised by the Lombardy Region, and it is run by the volunteer association “Amici di Cavargna”.
The rooms illustrate the valley’s traditional crafts, such as working tinware and iron, cheese-making, woodworking and charcoal, bread and pasta, wool and costume, and the extraction of iron from the local mines. One section is devoted to the magnani, the itinerant tinsmiths and coppersmiths who repaired copper, with tools such as the “trida”, the hammer and the small anvil, and with their slang, the “rungin”. The traditional costume preserves women’s and men’s clothing from the late nineteenth century, while the section on popular religiosity brings together liturgical objects from the old parish church of San Lorenzo and the oratory of San Lucio, including eighteenth-century wooden statues.
The museum also has a room for screening documentaries and a small library with an archive, available on request.
