About the museum

The museum is housed in Porta San Paolo, one of the main gates of the Mura Aureliane, built in the 3rd century AD. The current name dates from the Middle Ages, when the gate was linked to the nearby basilica of San Paolo; the gate has two arches, from which the ancient Via Ostiense and Via Laurentina set out. The building, next to the Piramide Cestia, preserves its history from the Roman period to the Second World War.

The collections document the area between Rome and Ostia along the Via Ostiense and include three decorated arcosolia and paintings from a 3rd-century tomb found near the basilica of San Paolo, casts of inscriptions, funerary cippi, reliefs, sarcophagi, imperial portraits and mosaics, including an opus sectile of the 4th century, as well as prints and photographs. Two large models show ancient Ostia and the imperial harbours of Claudius and Trajan.

In the eastern tower there are frescoes from the late 13th and early 14th century, from a chapel used by a Byzantine community.
