About the museum
The museum park occupies the former freight yard of Porta San Paolo station, in the Ostiense district, beside the terminus of the Roma-Lido railway. It was opened by the company Met.Ro. on 18 September 2004, on an idea of the engineer Angelo Curci, to preserve and show the historic material of the railways that connected Rome with its coast and the Castelli Romani.
The open-air display includes restored locomotives, electric trains and trams built between 1907 and 1945, from the Roma–Civita Castellana–Viterbo, Roma–Fiuggi–Alatri–Frosinone and Roma–Lido lines, as well as from the tramways of the Castelli Romani. Indoors are models, instruments and objects that tell the story of the capital’s railway and tram transport.
The museum has been closed to the public since 2020, first because of anti-Covid measures and then for maintenance work. When the Roma-Lido railway passed from ATAC to ASTRAL on 1 July 2022, management of the museum complex passed to ASTRAL, and in October 2022 the park reopened to the public.
