About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Fernando Pizzamiglio, father of the current owners of the La Tosa farm. The collection began in 1988 and now numbers more than four hundred pieces, some very rare, almost all used in Emilia between the early 19th and the early 20th century. It is listed as one of only two wine museums in Emilia-Romagna.
The current display, opened in 2015 and designed by the architect Massimo Simini, is interactive and educational. Five sections, each introduced by a descriptive text, trace the stages of wine-making, from planting the vineyard to bottling and consumption, with captions, drawings, plates, old documents, town criers' proclamations (grida) and prints. A playful section is designed for children, a musical background plays folk songs about wine performed by the group Enerbia, and some video interviews address viticultural topics.
The museum is linked to a library with around 500 antique Italian and French books on viticulture and oenology from about 1750 to 1940, as well as prints, 19th-century maps of the Piacenza vineyards and wine-themed postcards.
