About the museum
The museum was founded in 1997 to house the finds from the excavations at the Sant'Andrea site, on the edge of the town of Travo on the banks of the Trebbia. Traces of a Neolithic settlement have been investigated there since 1995. The collection also includes material from 175 other sites in the middle Val Trebbia, surveyed from 1981 onward together with the Soprintendenza (heritage authority) and the association La Minerva.
The exhibition in the Castello Anguissola is arranged in chronological sections, from the Paleolithic to the early Middle Ages. The oldest finds date from the Neanderthal period, while the Late Neolithic material, linked to the Chassey culture, comes largely from the Sant'Andrea archaeological park.
Since July 2020 the museum and archaeological park have been run by the cultural enterprise ArcheoVea. In March 2023 the museum was named after Anna Maria Piana, a teacher and promoter of archaeological research in the Val Trebbia, whose personal archive is kept in a dedicated room.
