About the museum
The museum was conceived by Massimo Pallottino in 1955, at the same time as the Istituto di Etruscologia e Antichità Italiche of Sapienza was founded, and it opened in 1962 on the occasion of the 6th International Congress of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences. It was meant to complement the Museo dei Gessi, today the Museo dell’Arte classica, and the Museo delle Origini.
In 1975 the flooding of the rooms on the semi-basement floor forced its closure for more than a decade; the museum reopened in 1988 and was enriched with models of the sanctuaries of Etruria. In the following years the display was renewed with new panels, showcases, a teaching room and a cataloguing room, and in 2000 the new section devoted to artistic production was presented, divided between sculpture, toreutics (metalwork) and painting.
The holdings are based on two main nuclei: the Collezione Gorga, with Etruscan and Italic ceramics from the Archaic to the Late Hellenistic period and important bronzes, and the Collezione Rellini, with materials from the Faliscan, Capenate and Adriatic areas. Over time, materials from the so-called “cavernette falische” (Faliscan caves) of Corchiano and other finds from the Museo delle Origini and the Museo Preistorico Etnografico “Luigi Pigorini” have been added. The museum is housed in the building of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy, on the Sapienza university campus (Città universitaria).
