About the museum
Teaching in anthropology was established at the Sapienza in 1884 and entrusted to Giuseppe Sergi, who began a first collection. From 1887 the Institute of Anthropology was housed in the Collegio Romano, where the long corridor with shelves and cabinets became the museum’s “gallery”, a point of reference for conservation, teaching and research. Over time, finds and collections from all over the world were brought together.
Between 1929 and 1935 the collection was enriched with its most important pieces, the Neanderthal skulls of Saccopastore. In 1938, under the direction of Sergio Sergi, the Institute, with its laboratories, library and museum, moved to the Città universitaria (university campus), where it still is today. The museum, named after Giuseppe Sergi in 1984, occupies a large room on the second floor of the Anthropology building.
In the same space there is a permanent exhibition area that presents anthropology as the natural history of humankind and the history of this scientific discipline; it is visited by students, school groups, tourists and a varied public.
