About the museum
The MUST was created from the union of the three historic museums of Geology, Mineralogy and Palaeontology of the University of Rome La Sapienza, which brought their collections together in a single route devoted to the Earth sciences. The museum is part of the Polo museale Sapienza and is housed in the building of the Department of Earth Sciences, on the university campus.
The heritage comprises about 34,000 mineralogical specimens, 6,000 geological specimens and 100,000 palaeontological finds, including specimens regarded as unique at national and international level. Books, thematic maps and scientific instruments of historical interest accompany the collections.
The museum extends over about 4,100 square metres on four floors, almost entirely given over to exhibition rooms; about 300 square metres house research laboratories shared with the department. Since 3 November 2025 it has reopened with refurbished spaces, including the room of systematic mineralogy and the laboratory of fluorescent minerals.
