About the museum
The Museo delle Carrozze d’Epoca grew out of some forty years of research and collecting of animal-drawn vehicles. It is located in the Via Ardeatina area, south of Rome, in an area rich in archaeological, artistic and religious sites.
The collection includes more than three hundred carriages and carts, of which about 160 are on display over some 3,000 square metres. Among the best-known pieces are the carts used in the films “Ben Hur” and “Il Gladiatore” (Gladiator), a children’s pram that belonged to Princess Sissi, and the harnesses of the stagecoach from “Ombre rosse” (Stagecoach).
Alongside the vehicles are displayed saddles, trappings, ancient weapons and armour, toys and farm tools. The museum is part of the museums of the Lazio Region and also offers experiences such as tea and aperitivo in a carriage.
