About the museum
The Museo della Civiltà Romana has a distinctive character among the museums of Rome: its material consists largely of reproductions, that is casts of statues and bas-reliefs, models of buildings and monumental complexes, dioramas and objects of everyday use. Among the best-known works are the complete series of casts of Trajan's Column and the large model of imperial Rome at a scale of 1:250, designed by Italo Gismondi.
The core of the collections was formed in the first half of the 20th century with two great exhibitions on Roman civilisation: the Mostra Archeologica of 1911 and the Mostra Augustea della Romanità of 1937. To display these materials permanently, a building was designed in the new district built for the 1942 Esposizione Universale di Roma (EUR), by the architects Aschieri, Bernardini, Pascoletti and Peressutti. The monumental layout is inspired by a theatrical classicism, with two large parallel bodies and a travertine portico that delimits the square.
The museum was inaugurated in 1952 and documents the history, art and customs of the Roman world. Since 2014 it has been closed for works to requalify and secure the building; the official website indicates a temporary closure, with no reopening date. The Planetarium is located in the same building.
