About the museum
The Museo delle Ferrovie della Sardegna is housed in the ARST railway park, in Via Pompeo in Monserrato, and is devoted to the history of the island’s narrow-gauge lines. It opened in 1996 and remained closed for more than ten years because of water infiltration; the Sardinia Region financed extraordinary maintenance with €530,000 in 2010 and €350,000 in 2019.
The museum reopened to the public on 27 June 2025 with a completely renovated exhibition route. The display extends over around 1,000 square metres and presents the materials used to build and run the lines and the historic stations, with ancient steam locomotives and period carriages. The historic rolling stock is also kept in the outdoor yards, together with documents and relics from the workshops. The site is also linked to the Trenino Verde, whose tourist services leave from Monserrato for Mandas and Isili.
