About the museum

The museum is housed in the former Palladio power station, an early twentieth-century industrial heritage building that supplied the nearby Trabia and Tallarita mining complex, between Riesi and Sommatino. The complex lies on the gypsum-sulphur plateau of central Sicily, and its first workings date back to the seventeenth century.

Organised exploitation of the deposits began in the nineteenth century, under the princes of Trabia and later various companies, including the Florio family and, from 1964, the Ente Minerario Siciliano (Sicilian Mining Authority). Around 1920 the two mines were among the most productive in the world, with some three thousand workers. Competition from sulphur extracted in the United States hit the sector from the 1950s, and activity ceased definitively in 1975.

The museum opened in 2010 with an educational route that reconstructs the mine structures and the lives of the workers. Inside are a simulation of the descent into the mine, a multimedia space, the large Franco Tosi engines of the power station and a timeline of the history of sulphur.
