About the museum
The museum is housed in Palazzo Malfitano, a 15th-century noble residence of which the church and the hospital of San Rocco were part. The hospital was founded in 1544 by Mazziotta Lauricella, of the Lords of Giacchetto, to care for pilgrims and poor sick people. The palace was donated to the town in the 18th century by Donna Antonia Notarbartolo, Marchioness of Malfitano, and in 1749 it was entrusted to the sisters of the Collegio di Maria, responsible for the education of girls.
The prints collection has grown since 1998, thanks to the donation of an initial nucleus of one hundred works by the master Bruno Caruso, honorary citizen of Naro, who also worked to bring in further donations. The section opened to the public as a permanent exhibition in 2000, with more than 240 works in etchings, drypoints, aquatints, lithographs, screenprints and woodcuts. To these were added nine original plates by engravers from the 17th to the 19th century, including Rembrandt, Goya and Gustave Doré. Today there are around five hundred works.
The town council formally established the civic museum in 2017, at the instigation of the cultural association Indàra. The graphic arts section occupies the spaces of the former hospital of San Rocco.
